Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor
Joshua has a bachelor’s degree in psychology and graduated from the University of Houston Clear Lake with a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health. Joshua is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC) in the state of Utah.
Joshua has experience working with adults, adolescents, and families in multiple levels of care. He understands that trusting, non-judgmental, and culturally informed relationships are critical for therapeutic progress. Joshua enjoys and has spent more than 12 years working and living amongst ethnically, financially, and culturally diverse populations in Houston, TX. Experience as a first responder equips him with the appropriate knowledge to meet the needs of individuals in high-stress career fields.
Joshua uses validated assessment tools and a collaborative approach for developing strategies that will enable the client to reach goals for improving mental health and wellness. He believes that all individuals have the ability to discover and develop their strengths, resilience, and purpose. He is passionate in empowering his clients to develop skills, process challenges, gain knowledge, and discover answers. Joshua provides a supportive and encouraging environment while learning to manage life’s obstacles. Clients may choose to work toward reaching goals in the peaceful atmosphere of a Christian Center therapy room or out on the hiking trail.
Joshua has specialized training in Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Moral Reconation Therapy (MRT), and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy (TFCBT).
In addition to talk therapy, Joshua is a practitioner of Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) and has specialized training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. ART is an evidence-based approach that helps individuals reconsolidate traumatic memories, so they no longer elicit strong emotional or physical responses. This allows thoughts to change naturally and enables individuals to experience post-traumatic growth. ART therapy can be helpful for depression, anxiety, trauma, and any distressing feelings or scenes. ART is a new therapy to Utah, but not to the greater United States, and is shown to achieve benefits much more rapidly than traditional talk therapy (usually within 1-5 sessions). More information about ART can be found here.
EMDR is a method of psychotherapy that has been widely researched as an effective method of treatment for trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and disturbing memories. EMDR can also be effective in treating anxiety. EMDR is an integrative psychotherapeutic approach that assists an individual to process memories and promote emotional healing.
