Happy Earth Day! Yesterday we were at the film screening of “Just Eat It” to talk about how both of our food pantry locations (Park City & Heber) participate in a nationwide program called “Feeding America”. The quantity varies every day, but in 2015 we collected 926,773 pounds of food!
This network allows us to pick up daily food donations from area grocery stores like: Walmart, Smith’s, Whole Foods, and Fresh Market. We also (not through Feeding America) pick up daily donations from Starbucks, Kneaders, and Copper Moose Farms (seasonally).
We take produce, dairy, bakery, and meat that is close to expiration date (but still quality) that stores can’t/won’t sell and we give it out for free to customers through our food pantries 6 days a week. Food that has expired or gone bad/stale, we give to local famers and are soon starting a composting program! This process helps to eliminate food waste and help those in need. We want to thank Bill White, founder of Bill White Restaurants, for his help composting all of our food leftovers, so that we can move closer to becoming a zero-waste facility!
