MFT
Brigette Elgie earned her B.A. in psychology at Smith College in Massachusetts and her M.A. in Counseling Psychology at Santa Clara University in Northern California with an emphasis in marriage and family therapy. She has been a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in California since 2006. She also holds a Professional Clinical Counselor license in California and a Marriage and Family Therapy license in the states of Utah, Washington and New Hampshire.
During graduate school, Brigette co-developed and directed a group treatment program for child witnesses of domestic violence. She has worked in a variety of settings including inner-city schools, county and city programs as well as in private practice. She specializes in treating trauma using Accelerated Resolution Therapy and has expertise in parenting, childhood behavior disorders, and grief and loss.
In addition to talk therapy, Brigette is a Master Practitioner in Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) and has specialized training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. ART is an evidence-based approach that helps individuals reconsolidate traumatic memories, so they no longer elicit strong emotional or physical responses. This allows thoughts to change naturally and enables individuals to experience post-traumatic growth. ART therapy can be helpful for depression, anxiety, trauma, and any distressing feelings or scenes. ART is a new therapy to Utah, but not to the greater United States, and is shown to achieve benefits much more rapidly than traditional talk therapy (usually within 1-5 sessions). More information about ART can be found here.
EMDR is a method of psychotherapy that has been widely researched as an effective method of treatment for trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and disturbing memories. EMDR can also be effective in treating anxiety. EMDR is an integrative psychotherapeutic approach that assists an individual to process memories and promote emotional healing.
